ISO 4217

From the Vrienden Universe, a fictional wiki

ISO 4217 is an international standard that defines three-letter alphabetic codes and three-digit numeric codes for the representation of currencies. The standard is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is used globally in banking, finance, trade, and accounting systems to ensure consistent identification of currencies.

The standard provides a uniform method for referring to currencies without relying on symbols or localized names. This allows financial institutions, governments, and international organizations to communicate monetary information in a standardized format.

Structure of the codes

[edit | edit source]

ISO 4217 currency codes normally consist of three letters.

The first two letters usually correspond to the country or territory code derived from the ISO 3166 standard, while the third letter generally represents the name of the currency. For example, currencies often use the first two letters of the country and the first letter of the currency name.

Each currency is also assigned a numeric code and a minor unit value that indicates the number of decimal places used for subdivision of the currency.

Types of codes

[edit | edit source]

The ISO 4217 standard includes several types of codes.

National currency codes

[edit | edit source]

These represent official currencies used by sovereign states or territories. They are the most commonly used codes in international financial systems.

Precious metal codes

[edit | edit source]

The standard also defines codes for precious metals that are traded on financial markets. These codes are used similarly to currencies in international transactions and financial instruments.

Funds and special codes

[edit | edit source]

Some codes represent funds, testing codes, or special accounting units used by financial systems and institutions.

Maintenance

[edit | edit source]

The ISO 4217 standard is maintained by a registration authority that updates the list of codes when currencies are introduced, replaced, or withdrawn. Updates are issued periodically to reflect changes in global monetary systems.

Use in financial systems

[edit | edit source]

ISO 4217 codes are widely used in banking networks, payment systems, accounting software, and international trade documentation. They are commonly used in electronic transactions, exchange rate reporting, and financial data systems.

Because the codes are standardized and internationally recognized, they reduce ambiguity in financial communication between institutions operating in different countries.
