Editing Calabria Citra (section)

== History ==
Calabria Citra developed from the older administrative division of Calabria into nearer and farther provinces. The name ''Citra'' referred to the part of Calabria nearer to [[Naples]], the capital of the Kingdom of Naples, while Calabria Ultra referred to the farther southern part of the region.

Cosenza was the chief city of Calabria Citra. The city had earlier been the ancient Cosentia, capital of the Bruttii before Roman control. It remained a regional centre through later Byzantine, Norman, Angevin, Spanish, Bourbon, and Italian periods.

During the early modern period, Calabria Citra was shown in European cartography as a defined Calabrian province. Joan Blaeu's 1665 map ''Calabria Citra'' presented the province as part of the wider geography of southern Italy.

The province remained within the Kingdom of Naples until 1816, when Naples and Sicily were joined as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Under the later Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Calabria Citra continued as a mainland province with Cosenza as its seat. After the annexation of the Two Sicilies into the unified Italian state, the province became the [[Province of Cosenza]].
