== Early life ==
Carmine Nostrini was born on 3 February 1825 in [[Rossano]], then part of [[Calabria Citra]] in the [[Kingdom of the Two Sicilies]]. He was the son of Giuseppe Nostrini and [[Beatrice Marino]] and belonged to the Ionian branch of the Nostrini family. Nostrini began instruction in Rossano on 12 October 1831. His lessons initially focused on handwriting and arithmetic. He later learned to copy leases and prepare port correspondence. On 3 February 1843, he began carrying letters between the Rossano household and his father's contacts in Naples.<ref name="giuseppe-personal"/>
