== Early life ==
Caterina Ferraro was born on 21 March 1721 in Cosenza, in [[Calabria Citra]], then part of the [[Kingdom of Naples]]. Her father, Pietro Ferraro, worked as a notarial copyist. Her mother was Lucia Gallo.

Ferraro began parish instruction at the church of San Giorgio on 4 October 1728. She learned to read parish entries and perform the arithmetic used in household accounts. In 1737, her father began training her to copy expense records.
