== Geography and geology ==
Mont Tanoa rises from the central interior of [[Tanoa]]. The lower slopes are covered by dense tropical rainforest, while the higher elevations are frequently affected by fog, heavy rainfall, and cloud cover. The surrounding highlands are sparsely populated due to steep terrain, restricted access, and later security controls imposed during the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen period.

The summit area contains an older crater system, cooled lava formations, lava rock fields, and natural underground cavities. Some of these cavities were later enlarged into tunnels, storage chambers, and reinforced underground facilities. Geothermal heat and gas vents have been reported in parts of the crater zone. The volcano remains classified as dormant due to its 1966 eruption and continuing minor geothermal activity.
