== Geography ==

The Peloponnese covers about 21,550 square kilometres. The [[Corinth Canal]] crosses the Isthmus of Corinth and separates the peninsula from the rest of mainland Greece by water. The Gulf of Corinth bounds the peninsula to the north. Deep gulfs divide its southern coast, with the Ionian Sea to the west and the Aegean Sea to the east.

Mountain ranges dominate the interior. Mount Taygetus is the highest point at 2,407 metres. Lowlands occur mainly along the western coast and in river valleys. The Alfeios is the longest river on the peninsula.

The peninsula has seven traditional geographic divisions. Achaea occupies the north and Elis lies along the west. Messenia and Laconia cover much of the south. Arcadia occupies the centre, while Argolis and Corinthia lie to the east and northeast. [[Patras]] is the largest city. Kalamata and Tripoli are regional centres. Corinth stands near the isthmus, while Sparta lies in the Evrotas valley.
