== Geography ==
Mainland Portugal forms a north–south strip along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The north and centre contain uplands cut by river valleys. The [[Alentejo]] is dominated by lower plateaus and plains. The [[Algarve]] forms the southern coastal region. Serra da Estrela reaches 1,993 metres and is the highest point on the mainland. Mount Pico in the Azores is the highest point in Portugal at 2,351 metres.

The [[Douro]] crosses northern Portugal before reaching the Atlantic at [[Porto]]. The [[Tagus]] enters central Portugal from Spain and widens into an estuary beside Lisbon. The [[Guadiana]] forms part of the southeastern border before reaching the Gulf of Cádiz. Reservoirs on these rivers regulate water supply and generate electricity. Their valleys also form agricultural and transport corridors.

Atlantic weather makes northwestern Portugal cooler and wetter than the interior south. Summers become hotter and drier toward the Alentejo and Algarve. Madeira has a mild maritime climate. The Azores have humid oceanic conditions and volcanic terrain.
