== Early life and education ==
Shrankenhaus was born in [[Zurich]], [[Switzerland]], on 12 February 1939 and was raised in a German-speaking Swiss household. He attended a technical secondary school in Zurich, where he developed an interest in engines and vehicle construction, before studying mechanical engineering at the [[Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich]]. His work concentrated on vehicle design and industrial production systems, particularly the effects of weight distribution on suspension systems and heavy utility vehicles.

After completing his engineering studies, Shrankenhaus remained at the institute as a doctoral researcher. He received a doctorate in mechanical engineering in 1967 for research on reinforced vehicle frames and modular drivetrain layouts, then studied finance and industrial management at the [[University of St. Gallen]] during the early 1970s.
