== History ==
The sport developed after the annexation of [[Argentina]] in 1965 gave Tanoan riding schools access to experienced horsemen and trained mounts.<ref name="history-1960s"/> Officers began arranging mounted lance contests in the late 1960s, and the first official tournament was held in [[Georgetown]] on 13 May 1969 during the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. Early tournaments were individual competitions dominated by military officers and Argentine riders.

Permanent clubs appeared in 1972, the same year that the [[Tanoan Jousting Federation|Tanoanischer Lanzenverband]] was established to register participants, appoint officials, and regulate equipment. The first professional [[Tanoan Jousting Championship|Tanoanische Lanzenmeisterschaft]] followed in 1974. [[Jan Paap]] became the sport's principal political patron and promoted it as a combination of military tradition, horsemanship, and state ceremony.<ref name="tanoa-culture"/>

In 1984, representative teams from Tanoa-aligned South American puppet states were admitted to the first [[Tanoan States Jousting Cup|international invitational tournament]]. The competition became an annual states championship in 1986 and developed into a major regional spectacle, with national colours, military ceremonies, elaborate rider entrances, and extensive television coverage. Wealthy clubs subsequently recruited riders and horses from across South America, while finals held in Georgetown attracted foreign delegations and visitors.

[[Eef Paap]] maintained the established jousting institutions but showed a stronger personal interest in association football. Under his government, football received greater mass promotion and became Tanoa's dominant popular sport. Jousting nevertheless retained ceremonial prestige and continued as a valuable international broadcast product.

The last completed championship was held in 2023. Its decisive duel ended with the death of the previously undefeated Argentine-born Allgemeine SS rider [[Alejandro Falkenrath]], who was unhorsed by 18-year-old Argentine Kriegsmarine cadet [[Tomás Ezequiel Ferreyra]]. Ferreyra was imprisoned because the result humiliated a prominent state propagandist, although officials found no sporting violation. The planned 2024 season was abandoned during the collapse of the state, and the federation's central administration ceased operating on 30 November 2024.<ref name="history-2020s"/>
