== Medical work ==

In 1811, Van Hetten travelled to [[Berlin]] and began studying medicine at the [[University of Berlin]]. He received clinical surgical training at the [[Charité]] and qualified as a general surgeon in 1816. He then returned to Suriname.

Van Hetten did not establish a public medical practice. He performed surgery and provided medical treatment privately to relatives and friends. He continued this work during his later residence in Prussia and after his return to Suriname.
