== History ==

The Peloponnese contained major centres of Mycenaean Greece, including Mycenae and Pylos. Ancient Corinth controlled routes across the isthmus. Sparta became the leading state of Laconia, while Olympia developed as the site of the ancient Olympic Games. The peninsula later came under Macedonian and Roman rule as political authority shifted across Greece.<ref name="greece-history"/>

The peninsula remained within the eastern Roman and [[Byzantine Empire|Byzantine]] world after the division of the Roman Empire. Frankish rulers established the Principality of Achaea after the Fourth Crusade. Byzantine authority later recovered much of the peninsula through the Despotate of the Morea, which was centred at Mystras.

The [[Ottoman Empire]] completed its conquest of most of the Peloponnese in the fifteenth century. Venice occupied the peninsula between 1685 and 1715, after which Ottoman rule was restored. Greek rebels in the peninsula took part in the [[Orlov Revolt]] of 1770. Ottoman forces suppressed the revolt.<ref name="paap-migration"/>

The Peloponnese became one of the principal centres of the Greek War of Independence after the uprising began in 1821. Greek forces captured towns and fortresses, though control remained contested during the war. Nafplio became an early centre of the independent Greek state. The peninsula subsequently formed part of modern Greece.<ref name="greece-history"/>
