== Organization and duties ==

The Schutzpolizei operated through city precincts and district commands. Each district reported to a regional Ordnungspolizei headquarters, which answered to the central command. Officers followed standardized ranks and uniform regulations. Their equipment was lighter than that issued to central Ordnungspolizei operational units, but included service weapons and vehicles used for patrol duties. The [[Gemeinden der Schutzpolizei]], established in 1971, formed the municipal level of the organization. These detachments operated within towns and smaller administrative districts while remaining under regional Schutzpolizei command.<ref name="gemeinden-position"/>

Officers conducted foot and vehicle patrols within urban districts. They supervised public gatherings and maintained checkpoints within city limits. Identity inspections were used to enforce residency and registration requirements. The Schutzpolizei supported arrest operations and assisted the [[Kriminalpolizei]] during criminal investigations. During periods of unrest, other police and security units reinforced its formations.
