== Government and politics == Portugal is a unitary semi-presidential republic governed under the constitution of 1976. The president serves as head of state. Executive authority is exercised by the government, which is led by the prime minister. The Assembly of the Republic is the unicameral national legislature. Courts exercise judicial authority independently from the executive and legislature. Mainland Portugal is divided into districts and municipalities. The [[Azores]] and [[Madeira]] are autonomous regions with elected assemblies and regional governments.
