== Government and economy ==

Ukraine is a unitary semi-presidential republic. The president serves as head of state, while the prime minister leads the government. Legislative authority belongs to the unicameral [[Verkhovna Rada]].

The country is divided into 24 oblasts, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol, which hold separate administrative status. Oblasts are divided into raions and municipalities. Regional administrations carry out state policy, while elected councils manage local responsibilities.

Ukraine's economy includes agriculture, manufacturing, mining, energy production, construction, transport and services. The central and southern plains support the production of wheat, maize, barley, sunflower seed and other crops. Industrial regions developed around coal, iron ore, metallurgy, machinery, chemicals and railway production.

Road and railway routes connect Kyiv with the country's regional centres and neighbouring states. Western routes pass through Lviv, Uzhhorod and other border cities toward Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. The Uzhhorod–Vyšné Nemecké crossing connects Zakarpattia with Slovakia, while the nearby Chop crossing connects the region with Hungary.<ref name="uzhhorod-transport"/>

The Dnieper supports inland transport, water supply and hydroelectric generation. Black Sea ports connect Ukrainian agricultural and industrial regions with maritime trade routes. Odesa is the largest port city, while other coastal and river ports handle freight, passenger traffic and regional shipping.
