Austria developed from medieval territories associated with the Babenberg and Habsburg dynasties. It became a major European power through the Habsburg monarchy and later formed the core of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary.

Following the First World War, Austria-Hungary dissolved and the Republic of Austria was established in 1918. The country experienced political instability during the interwar period and was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938. After the Second World War, Austria was occupied by Allied powers until the restoration of full sovereignty in 1955.

The Second Republic developed as a neutral parliamentary state. Austria entered deeper European political and economic integration in 1995 and remained active in European diplomacy, international organizations, and cross-border economic policy.
