== Economy == Services account for most Portuguese economic activity. Tourism is concentrated in Lisbon and Porto. The Algarve and the Atlantic islands are the principal resort regions. Banking is concentrated in the main urban regions. Retail activity follows the largest population centres, while port cities support transport services. Export manufacturing is concentrated in northern and central Portugal. Textile and footwear production remains established around Porto and Braga. Vehicle assembly and component plants form another industrial base. Forest resources support the cork and paper industries. Farming reflects the contrast between the wetter north and the drier south. Vineyards line the Douro valley. Estates in the Alentejo produce cork from oak woodland. Olive cultivation is also widespread, and grain is grown on open land. Fishing remains important to coastal communities. The deep-water port of Sines handles container and energy traffic. Lisbon and Leixões connect Portugal to Atlantic shipping routes.
