== Population and language == Most of the population lives in urban areas. Madrid forms the largest metropolitan region. Barcelona is the main population centre on the Mediterranean coast. Other densely populated areas developed around regional capitals and coastal industrial corridors. Parts of the central interior have lower population densities. Spanish is the official language of the state. Catalan has co-official status in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, while Valencian is its official regional name in the Valencian Community. Galician is co-official in Galicia. Basque is co-official in the Basque Country and parts of Navarre. Aranese is co-official in Catalonia.
