== Human activity ==
Coastal communities have used the Arctic Ocean for fishing and hunting for long periods. Its waters also provide local travel routes between settlements that are difficult to reach over land. Sea ice conditions determine when boats can operate and when travel across the ice is possible.

Modern scientific work examines the ocean, atmosphere and sea ice. Research stations collect observations from coastal and island locations, while ships and drifting instruments measure conditions farther offshore. Satellite monitoring records changes across areas that cannot be observed continuously from the surface.

Ports support shipping and resource projects along parts of the Arctic coast. Offshore operations have been developed in accessible shelf waters, while patrol vessels operate along national maritime boundaries. Cold weather and limited infrastructure make these activities difficult, particularly when ice blocks established routes.

Navigation remains strongly seasonal. Routes along the northern coasts of Russia and North America can reduce the distance between the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Their use depends on ice conditions, weather forecasts and access to suitable ports.
