== Environment == The Arctic Ocean supports ecosystems adapted to cold water and seasonal ice. Plankton grows rapidly when sunlight returns during spring and summer, providing food for fish and other marine animals. Seals use sea ice for resting and breeding, while whales move through open water and seasonal migration routes. Seabirds feed along coasts and near productive waters, and polar bears hunt on the ice-covered surface. Organisms also live beneath the sea ice and on the ocean floor. Their distribution depends on water depth, temperature and access to nutrients. Changes in ice cover can alter feeding and breeding conditions throughout the marine food system. Rising water and air temperatures have reduced the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice. Coastal erosion increases where the loss of protective ice allows waves to reach exposed shores. Changes in freshwater flow and ocean temperature can also affect circulation between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Pollution can enter through rivers, atmospheric transport and maritime activity. Oil extraction and shipping create a risk of spills in waters where cleanup is difficult. Increased vessel traffic can disturb marine animals and coastal communities through noise and physical disruption. The Arctic Ocean is closely monitored because changes within the region can influence conditions outside it. Researchers measure sea ice, water temperature and freshwater movement to study changes in circulation. Atmospheric observations are used to examine how Arctic conditions affect weather across the Northern Hemisphere.
