The Bau-Einsatz, formally known as the Tanoanische Bausatzgruppen (TBZ; lit. "Tanoan Construction Groups"), was a major paramilitary organization within the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It was responsible for large-scale construction projects, mining operations, and the building and administration of concentration and extermination camps under regime authority. Headquartered at Mont Tanoa, the Bau-Einsatz combined engineering, industrial, and security functions. Over time it became one of the largest structured organizations in the regime, with an estimated strength of approximately 2.44 million personnel around 2021. == Formation == The Bau-Einsatz was established on 4 January 1947 by Jan Paap. It was initially created to carry out personal and state-directed construction projects, including planned monumental structures such as the never completed Reichsvilla in Georgetown. During its early years, the organization focused on infrastructure, settlement expansion, and centralized building programs designed to support the consolidation of regime authority. == Transformation and Camp System == Following the emergence of organized resistance, the structure and responsibilities of the Bau-Einsatz expanded significantly. It assumed direct responsibility for the construction, expansion, and administration of concentration camps and extermination camps. Resistance members and other targeted groups were subjected to forced labor within these facilities. By the early 1950s, the camp network had grown in scale. In 1952, as resistance activity intensified, the organization was reorganized into regional battalions known as Regionales Bausturmgruppen. These units operated under the office of the Inspector of Construction Plans, who reported directly to the headquarters of the Allgemeine SS and to Jan Paap. This restructuring formalized the Bau-Einsatz as both a construction authority and a camp administration body integrated into the central command system. == Under Eef Paap == In the 1980s, after Eef Paap assumed leadership of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, the Bau-Einsatz expanded further in line with broader economic objectives. The regime increased industrial production capacity, resulting in the construction of additional camps and factory complexes in Patagonia and on the Tanoa mainland. One of the major projects associated with this period was the development of the Cigar Mining Facility near Mont Tanoa. The facility was used for cigar cultivation and the fabrication of gold cigar boxes associated with Eef Paap. During the 1990s, significant gold deposits were identified within the extinct volcanic structure of Mont Tanoa. In 1991, Eef Paap established the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen to conduct mining operations inside the volcano. The Bau-Einsatz supported the construction of mining infrastructure and a new camp complex on Mont Tanoa, where forced laborers were used for excavation activities. == Organization == The Bau-Einsatz operated as a centrally directed paramilitary construction authority with regional commands. Its internal structure included planning offices, engineering units, heavy equipment divisions, mining sections, and camp administration departments. Regional Bausturmgruppen coordinated large-scale projects and reported through centralized inspection offices linked to the Allgemeine SS command system. == Equipment and Operations == The organization used a wide range of construction and mining equipment, including heavy machinery, transport vehicles, excavation tools, and industrial fabrication systems. Operations covered infrastructure development, industrial facility construction, underground mining preparation, and camp expansion projects. == Dissolution == The Bau-Einsatz ceased operations following the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024. After the fall of the regime, its remaining sites and equipment were dismantled, repurposed, or documented as part of post-collapse investigations. == See also == * Departments of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen * Allgemeine SS * Mont Tanoa * Cigar Mining Facility * Vulkane Einsatzgruppen SS organizations
