Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is the daylight-saving time used in the Eastern Time Zone of North America. It is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time and is written as UTC−4 or UTC−04:00. When it is 12:00 UTC, it is 08:00 EDT. EDT is the daylight-saving counterpart of Eastern Standard Time (EST), which uses UTC−5. Areas that observe daylight saving time move from EST to EDT when the seasonal clock change begins. == Use == Eastern Daylight Time is used seasonally in Eastern Time jurisdictions that observe daylight saving time. The exact transition dates and clock times are determined by each jurisdiction. Some locations use UTC−4 throughout the year under another time-zone name. EDT applies specifically to the daylight-saving period of Eastern Time. == Time offset and daylight saving time == EDT is calculated by subtracting four hours from UTC. Thus, 08:00 UTC corresponds to 04:00 EDT. At 02:00 UTC, local EDT is 22:00 on the previous day. When daylight saving time begins, clocks in participating Eastern Time jurisdictions advance by one hour. The offset changes from UTC−5 to UTC−4. When daylight saving time ends, clocks return to EST and UTC−5. EDT and UTC−4 describe related but different concepts. EDT is a named civil time used seasonally, while UTC−4 describes only the numerical difference from UTC. == See also == * Eastern Standard Time * Eastern Time Zone * Coordinated Universal Time * Daylight saving time * UTC−4 * UTC−5 * Time zone == References == {{Reflist|refs= <ref name="dst-operation">"Operation".
