Economy of Tanoa under the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, 1944–2024 The economy of Tanoa was controlled by the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen from 1944 until the regime's collapse on 30 November 2024. The government directed industrial production and allocated resources according to state requirements. Mining and construction depended heavily on slavery and forced labor, while agricultural production was subject to government quotas. State factories manufactured equipment for the armed forces. The Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa administered state finances and issued the Tanoanische Reichsmark, which was used for internal payments and government accounting. == History == The economic system established by Jan Paap developed from the occupation of Tanoa in August 1944. After landing on Ravi-Ta, Paap forced native inhabitants to construct barracks and military facilities. His forces subsequently used enslaved inhabitants for road construction and the extraction of natural resources. Work assignments were issued by military commanders, who also controlled the distribution of food and supplies. In 1945, Paap established the Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa to administer gold reserves and confiscated property. The treasury recorded resources obtained through mining and military seizures. During this period, the government distributed materials through direct orders, without a public currency or independent financial institutions. As permanent mines and industrial facilities developed during the 1950s, the government introduced a monetary system for internal accounting. The treasury issued the Tanoanische Reichsmark during the early part of the decade. Financial access became subject to administrative controls based on a person's labor classification and residence status. The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen expanded its economic authority beyond the islands. Following the annexation of Argentina in 1965, the Reichsschatzamt assumed control of the Argentine banking system and industrial policy. Existing military production facilities were transferred to Tanoan institutions, including the aircraft factory at Córdoba. Financial administration was extended to the occupied territory through the Tanoanische Wirtschaftsverwaltung, which maintained banking records and regulated currency circulation. In 1975, the regime annexed Fiji. Agricultural businesses continued operating under Tanoan supervision, while the government incorporated Fijian ports and airfields into its transport system. The country's existing economic activities were subjected to the requirements of the Tanoan administration. == Currency and banking == The Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa issued the Tanoanische Reichsmark and controlled the state's monetary reserves. The currency was divided into 100 Pfennig and circulated in the form of coins and banknotes. Gold coins bearing the image of Jan Paap were issued during the regime's existence. Banknotes produced after 1980 carried the image of Eef Paap. The Reichsmark was used for government accounting and regulated payments. Its value was determined administratively, and it was not freely convertible into foreign currencies. The treasury also maintained state gold reserves, assigning precious metals artificially low values within its internal accounting system. The Banking Regulations Act of 1978 prohibited independent banking activity. Access to financial services was regulated through administrative records, while the Tanoanische Wirtschaftsverwaltung coordinated financial information with state institutions. Labor classification and population registration affected eligibility for financial services. == Mining == Mineral extraction supplied the Tanoan government with gold for its treasury and raw materials for industrial production. Mines were administered through state authorities, while prisoners and enslaved workers carried out much of the physical labor. The discovery of gold deposits beneath Mont Tanoa led to the expansion of mining operations inside the dormant volcano during the 1990s. On 8 August 1991, Eef Paap established the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen to supervise the volcanic complex. The Bau-Einsatz constructed mining infrastructure, including reinforced tunnels and underground work areas. Native Tanoan civilians were imprisoned at the Mont Tanoa concentration camp and forced to excavate gold. Prisoners also transported extracted ore through the tunnel system. The deposits included emeralds, which were mined alongside gold. The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen enforced work quotas and controlled access to the underground facilities. Extracted gold entered the reserve system administered by the Reichsschatzamt. == Agriculture == The Reichsministerium für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung administered agricultural production from 1951. It required farms to report their harvests and maintained records of livestock holdings. Regional agricultural offices used these records to assess food supplies and determine the output expected from farms. Food distribution operated through government rationing. The ministry received production reports from agricultural districts and assigned available supplies to distribution centers. Military requirements received priority, while the allocations provided to civilian populations depended on administrative decisions. Agricultural workers were assigned through government labor offices. The Reichsministerium für Arbeit und Organisation processed requests for farm workers and organized transfers when agricultural authorities reported shortages. Population records were used to identify workers available for assignment. == Industry and infrastructure == Industrial production was directed toward the requirements of the state and its armed forces. Factories manufactured weapons and military equipment, while workshops supplied replacement parts for machinery. The Reichsministerium für Industrie und Produktion supervised factory output through production targets and records of material requirements. The Bau-Einsatz constructed industrial facilities and infrastructure for the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. Its work also extended to the concentration camp network, where prisoners were forced to undertake construction projects. The government built roads to supply military installations and transport extracted materials. Between 2003 and 2004, approximately 110 km (68.44 mi) of paved roads were constructed in Fiji, primarily for military transport. Forced laborers carried out the construction work. == Forced labor == Slavery and compulsory labor assignments remained part of the economy throughout the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen's existence. The government used prisoners and enslaved civilians for work that supplied the state. Concentration camps provided labor for mining and weapons production, while guarded work detachments were assigned to construction projects. Labor authorities maintained records of workers and their assigned workplaces. The Reichsministerium für Arbeit und Organisation processed transfer orders between work sites, using information supplied by population registration offices. Police and SS units enforced compulsory assignments and detained people accused of refusing work. The government also restricted access to employment and financial services through racial classification. In 1976, it introduced the Neger Buch, a compulsory identity document for native inhabitants of Tanoa and people of color. Its records were subsequently connected to labor eligibility and financial access. Individuals could be denied employment or access to resources according to their administrative classification. == Collapse == The economy's central administration ceased functioning during the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen in November 2024. The government dissolved on 30 November, ending the authority of its economic ministries and treasury. The Tanoanische Reichsmark was withdrawn from circulation. At Mont Tanoa, mining operations stopped following the liberation of the concentration camp by the Fish Collective. Prisoners were released, and the remaining mining facilities were taken out of operation. The former mining complex was subsequently examined for environmental damage and hazards left by abandoned underground workings. == See also == * Tanoa Einsatzgruppen * Tanoanische Wirtschaftsverwaltung * Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa * Tanoanische Reichsmark * Camp and forced labor system of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen * Government of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen == References == {{Reflist|refs= <ref name="tanoa-economy">"Economy".
