He became known for his role in the [[North Hollywood shootout]] in 1997 and later for establishing the Bucharest Butchers' first lasting criminal structure in [[Los Angeles]]. Mătăsăreanu worked with [[Larry Phillips Jr.]] during the 1990s. After surviving the North Hollywood shootout, the two remained active in the Los Angeles criminal environment. In 1999, Mătăsăreanu established operations connected to the Bucharest Butchers' expansion into [[North America]]. These operations later became the foundation of the organization's [[California]] branch. The Los Angeles structure remained semi-autonomous until 2013, when [[Andrei Ionuț]] ordered its consolidation under direct Bucharest Butchers command. [[Petru Ionuț]] and [[Iakob Ionuț]] were sent to [[Hollywood]], [[Los Angeles]], to take control of the network. Before their arrival, Iakob killed Larry Phillips Jr., who had cooperated with the branch but had never been accepted as a formal Bucharest Butchers member. Mătăsăreanu returned secretly to [[Bucharest]] before the transfer was completed. On 28 August 2024, one week after Petru Ionuț was killed in Hollywood, Mătăsăreanu was poisoned with cyanide by [[Marku Ionuț]] at his residence in Bucharest. Marku killed him as part of an effort to remove older figures connected to the California branch and secure control over the overseas structure after Petru's death. == Early life == Emil Mătăsăreanu was born on 19 July 1966 in [[Timișoara]], [[Romania]]. His family later moved to the United States and settled in [[California]]. He spent much of his adult life in the Los Angeles area, where he became connected to criminal circles involving robbery, firearms, and cash-based activity. Before his involvement in the Bucharest Butchers' North American expansion, Mătăsăreanu was associated with small business activity, computer repair work, and local criminal contacts. His technical background and familiarity with equipment later made him useful in planning, storage, and vehicle-related support. == Association with Larry Phillips Jr. == Mătăsăreanu met [[Larry Phillips Jr.]] in the Los Angeles area in 1989. Their association developed through shared interests in weight training, weapons, and robbery planning. Phillips became Mătăsăreanu's closest criminal partner during the 1990s. The two carried out or were linked to several armed robberies before the North Hollywood shootout. Their activities included armored vehicle robberies, bank robberies, weapons acquisition, and preparation of vehicles and equipment used during robberies. Although Phillips remained Mătăsăreanu's main partner, he was never formally inducted into the [[Bucharest Butchers]]. Within the organization, Phillips was later regarded as a useful outside associate but not as a legitimate member. == North Hollywood shootout == On 28 February 1997, Mătăsăreanu and Phillips robbed a Bank of America branch in [[North Hollywood]], [[Los Angeles]]. Both men wore body armor and carried automatic rifles. After leaving the bank, they exchanged gunfire with officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. The shootout lasted for an extended period and injured several police officers and civilians. Mătăsăreanu and Phillips were wounded during the confrontation but avoided capture and escaped from the immediate area after the police response became fragmented. Their survival made the event one of the most significant failures in the local response to organized armed robbery during the period. The shootout gave both men a strong reputation in the Los Angeles criminal environment. It also brought Mătăsăreanu to the attention of Bucharest Butchers figures who were looking for a permanent foothold in [[California]]. == Establishment of the Los Angeles operation == In 1999, Mătăsăreanu established a local criminal structure in [[Los Angeles]] connected to the [[Bucharest Butchers]]. The operation was part of the organization's expansion into [[North America]] and became the earliest stable Bucharest Butchers presence in California. The early network focused on robbery, weapons movement, cash handling, storage, and logistical support. It relied on local criminal contacts, vehicles, safe properties, and connections developed after the North Hollywood shootout. Mătăsăreanu controlled the structure with a degree of independence and used Phillips as an outside associate. During this phase, the Los Angeles branch did not yet have the casino, political, and laundering structure that later existed under [[Petru Ionuț]]. It functioned mainly as a violent local network that moved money, weapons, and personnel while maintaining contact with Bucharest Butchers intermediaries. == Relations with the Bucharest Butchers == Mătăsăreanu's position inside the [[Bucharest Butchers]] was important but limited. He was useful because he had survived a major armed confrontation, had local contacts in Los Angeles, and could provide a base for later expansion. His work gave the organization a route into California without requiring senior Bucharest figures to relocate immediately. The Los Angeles operation remained semi-autonomous through the 2000s. It sent money, contacts, and logistical support back into the wider organization, but it was not fully integrated into the central hierarchy. This arrangement allowed Mătăsăreanu to keep practical control while still operating under Bucharest Butchers protection. By the early 2010s, the organization's leadership considered the arrangement unstable. After [[Andrei Ionuț]] became leader of the Bucharest Butchers in 2012, he moved to bring overseas operations under direct command. == Transfer of control in 2013 == In 2013, Andrei Ionuț ordered the consolidation of the Los Angeles branch. [[Petru Ionuț]] and [[Iakob Ionuț]] were sent to [[Hollywood]], [[Los Angeles]], to assume control of the structure originally developed by Mătăsăreanu. Before the transfer was completed, Andrei ordered the removal of [[Larry Phillips Jr.]], whose continued presence was viewed as a problem because he had never been accepted as a formal member of the Bucharest Butchers. Iakob Ionuț entered Phillips' residence in Hollywood, overpowered him with a wire, and strangled him to death. Mătăsăreanu did not remain in Los Angeles during the takeover. On the night before Petru and Iakob departed Romania, he secretly returned to [[Bucharest]], removing himself from the confrontation. After his departure, Petru took control of the California branch and turned it into the most profitable overseas structure controlled by the Bucharest Butchers. == Death == After Petru Ionuț began resisting the Bucharest Butchers in 2024, Marku Ionuț sought direct control over the overseas operations, especially the California structure centered in Los Angeles. Petru's authority over that structure was treated as an obstacle to Marku's internal takeover plans. On 21 August 2024, Iakob Ionuț killed Petru Ionuț inside Petru's casino complex in Hollywood. At 11:37 p.m. that night, Iakob called Marku and informed him that the killing had been completed. One week later, on 28 August 2024, Marku went personally to Mătăsăreanu's residence in [[Bucharest]]. During the visit, Marku poisoned Mătăsăreanu's drink with cyanide while Mătăsăreanu was not looking. Mătăsăreanu consumed the poisoned drink and died inside the residence. Marku remained present until Mătăsăreanu died, then left the property. The killing removed one of the remaining older figures connected to the original California branch and allowed Marku to continue consolidating control over the overseas structure after Petru's death. == Legacy == Mătăsăreanu is mainly remembered for three events: his survival of the North Hollywood shootout, his role in founding the Los Angeles branch of the [[Bucharest Butchers]], and his death during Marku Ionuț's 2024 consolidation of California-linked operations. The structure he established remained important long after he left Los Angeles. Under Petru Ionuț, it expanded into gambling, money laundering, weapons procurement, political corruption, and protected logistics. Its later destabilization after Petru's death weakened the Bucharest Butchers before the final destruction of the organization in 2025. == See also == * [[Bucharest Butchers]] * [[Larry Phillips Jr.]] * [[Petru Ionuț]] * [[Iakob Ionuț]] * [[Marku Ionuț]] * [[Andrei Ionuț]] * [[Los Angeles]] * [[California]] * [[North Hollywood shootout]] [[Category:1966 births]] [[Category:2024 deaths]] [[Category:People]] [[Category:Romanian criminals]] [[Category:Organized crime figures]] [[Category:Bucharest Butchers]] [[Category:Bucharest Butchers members]] [[Category:Los Angeles]] [[Category:California]] [[Category:Vriend Era]]
