Abandoned island of Fiji Matanivusi Island is an uninhabited island of Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 200 kilometres northwest of the main Fijian islands. It has an area of about 120 square kilometres. The island's former capital and its Tanoan military complex are now in ruins. Matanivusi was inhabited by Indigenous Fijians until the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen took control of the island during the 1980s. Chemical-agent testing contaminated the island and caused the removal of its population. From 1994 until 2023, Matanivusi was used for the Überlebensspektakel prisoner program. The island remains closed to permanent settlement. == Early history == Indigenous Fijian settlement on Matanivusi dates to at least the 18th century. The inhabitants lived mainly from farming and fishing and maintained maritime contact with other Fijian islands. Matanivusi came under British administration with the rest of Fiji in 1874. A trading settlement developed around the island's harbour and later became its capital. An airstrip was constructed near the eastern coast. The population reached approximately 2,000 during the middle of the 20th century. Copra production and limited tourism supported the local economy. == Tanoan occupation == Fiji was placed under Tanoan military administration in 1975. During the early 1980s, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen requisitioned Matanivusi and restricted civilian access. The airstrip was extended for military aircraft. A secured compound known as the nuclear area was built in the island's interior. The compound contained bunkers, storage facilities and research buildings. Chemical agents were tested on the island during the occupation. The tests contaminated inhabited land and water supplies. Residents were removed in stages during the 1980s and 1990s. Some inhabitants remained into the early 2000s. Exposure to the agents caused severe neurological impairment, including disorientation, loss of coordination and reduced speech. Local accounts described the behaviour of the most severely affected residents as "zombie-like". == Überlebensspektakel == The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen established the Überlebensspektakel program on Matanivusi in 1994. Prisoners were transported to the island and left inside the contaminated zone. The prisoners were monitored through cameras installed around the island. They had to find food, water and shelter while moving through the ruined settlements and military sites. Chemically affected residents and wildlife remained inside the restricted area. Recordings of the prisoners were viewed by senior Tanoan officials as entertainment. The program was also used to observe the effects of prolonged survival in a contaminated environment. Überlebensspektakel ended in 2023 after resistance activity in Fiji disrupted prisoner transport and the operation of the island's facilities. == Abandonment == The island was not reopened after the end of Überlebensspektakel. Its remaining Tanoan personnel withdrew following the dissolution of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024. The former capital has been abandoned since the early 2000s. Most of its buildings have collapsed or become overgrown. The harbour, airstrip and nuclear area are also in poor condition. Matanivusi remains uninhabited. Access is restricted because of chemical contamination, abandoned military material and unstable structures. == Geography == Matanivusi is a volcanic island with a forested interior and lower ground along the coast. Mangrove wetlands occupy sheltered coastal areas, while coral reefs surround much of the shoreline. The nuclear area lies in the central interior. Its bunkers and underground rooms remain sealed or partially collapsed. The abandoned airstrip is located on the eastern coast. The island has a tropical climate and is regularly affected by heavy rainfall and cyclones. Storm damage and vegetation growth have contributed to the deterioration of the former settlement and military facilities. == See also == * Tanoa Einsatzgruppen * Fiji * Chemical warfare * Überlebensspektakel == References == {{Reflist|refs= <ref name="fiji-colonial">"Colonial period".
