Mont Tanoa is the only volcano on the island of Tanoa. It is a large dormant volcanic massif in the island’s central highlands and forms one of the main geographic features of the island. The most recent confirmed eruption occurred in 1966. Since then, the volcano has remained dormant, with minor geothermal activity recorded in parts of the crater zone. During the period of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, Mont Tanoa became a restricted military-geological zone. Its volcanic structure, mineral deposits, and underground cavities were incorporated into mining, detention, and fortified construction programs. The mountain was closely associated with the Bau-Einsatz, the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen, the Mont Tanoa concentration camp, and the financial extraction system administered through the Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa. == Geography and geology == Mont Tanoa rises from the central interior of Tanoa. The lower slopes are covered by dense tropical rainforest, while the higher elevations are frequently affected by fog, heavy rainfall, and cloud cover. The surrounding highlands are sparsely populated due to steep terrain, restricted access, and later security controls imposed during the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen period. The summit area contains an older crater system, cooled lava formations, lava rock fields, and natural underground cavities. Some of these cavities were later enlarged into tunnels, storage chambers, and reinforced underground facilities. Geothermal heat and gas vents have been reported in parts of the crater zone. The volcano remains classified as dormant due to its 1966 eruption and continuing minor geothermal activity. == History == === Early geographic role === Before its militarization, Mont Tanoa was primarily known as the central volcanic structure of Tanoa. Its position shaped movement through the island’s interior, as roads, settlements, and later military routes were planned around the difficult terrain of the highlands. The mountain also served as a natural landmark separating coastal areas from the interior jungle regions. === Resource surveys and extraction === During the 1990s, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen intensified geological surveys in the central highlands. Survey programs identified significant gold deposits within the volcanic structure of Mont Tanoa. Later mining records also connected the mountain to emerald extraction. Mining operations expanded from surface prospecting to underground excavation. Shafts, ore transport corridors, reinforced chambers, and ventilation systems were built into the volcanic interior. Extracted gold was transferred into regime-controlled financial channels and became part of the reserve system administered by the Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa. === Establishment of the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen === Vulkane Einsatzgruppen On 8 August 1991, Eef Paap founded the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen as a specialized formation under the Bau-Einsatz. The unit was headquartered at Mont Tanoa and was given armed authority over the volcanic complex, including its surface perimeter, underground access points, mining areas, detention facilities, and transport routes. The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen did not function as the main mining workforce. Physical labor was carried out by prisoners held at the Mont Tanoa concentration camp. The unit supervised security, enforced production quotas, controlled movement, and carried out punishment and execution orders within the complex. == Facilities == === Surface complex === The surface complex at Mont Tanoa included administrative buildings, guard posts, barracks, storage depots, access roads, and industrial structures connected to the mining system. Ventilation chimneys linked parts of the surface sector with the underground tunnels. Checkpoints controlled movement between the lower slopes, crater rim, and restricted summit areas. The Bau-Einsatz constructed and maintained much of the physical infrastructure. Its role included tunnel reinforcement, heavy equipment deployment, transport preparation, and construction of camp-related structures. Security and internal discipline were controlled by the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen. === Vulkane Einsatzgruppen headquarters === The command site known as the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen HQ was located at Mont Tanoa. It served as the administrative and operational center for the unit’s activity across the volcanic complex. Officers stationed there coordinated perimeter security, guard assignments, prisoner movement, mining enforcement, and communication with Bau-Einsatz technical staff. The headquarters also controlled access to underground sectors. Certain deeper chambers were used for weapons testing, demolition trials, storage, and protected operations. Large-scale vehicle development and equipment testing were generally associated with wider Bau-Einsatz facilities, while Mont Tanoa was used for work connected to volcanic excavation, underground security, and fortified installations. === Underground installations === The interior of Mont Tanoa contained a network of tunnels, shafts, reinforced rooms, ore corridors, storage chambers, and restricted-access areas. Some spaces were adapted from natural volcanic cavities, while others were excavated for mining and military use. The tunnel system extended into the volcanic core and connected work areas with surface structures through guarded shafts and lifts. Underground sectors were used for gold and emerald extraction, ore transport, equipment storage, prisoner labor assignments, and protected command functions. Movement inside the system was regulated through checkpoints and assigned routes. Ventilation systems were built to support deeper work areas, although conditions for prisoners remained hazardous due to heat, dust, confined passages, and limited air circulation. == Mont Tanoa concentration camp == Mont Tanoa concentration camp The Mont Tanoa concentration camp was a detention and forced-labor complex located inside and around the volcanic structure. It operated from 1991 until 30 November 2024. The camp held Tanoan native civilians, who were assigned to excavation teams, tunnel reinforcement units, ore transport details, and maintenance crews. The camp was divided into surface and underground sectors. The surface sector contained barracks, administrative buildings, storage depots, guard towers, and industrial structures. The underground sector contained mining tunnels, shafts, ore chambers, and transport corridors. Access between the sectors was controlled by guarded checkpoints and secured elevator shafts. The camp formed a central part of the regime’s resource extraction system. Prisoner labor supported gold extraction, tunnel expansion, and maintenance of the volcanic installation. The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen enforced discipline and production requirements, while the Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa managed financial coordination connected to extracted gold. == Role during the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen period == Under the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, Mont Tanoa functioned as a controlled military, industrial, and detention zone. Access was restricted through checkpoints, patrol routes, permits, and armed guard posts. The mountain’s position in the central highlands made it suitable for fortified storage, hidden infrastructure, and protected mining activity. The complex linked several parts of the regime’s structure. The Bau-Einsatz provided construction and mining infrastructure. The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen controlled security and camp enforcement. The Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa administered extracted gold and connected the site to the wider financial system. The Mont Tanoa concentration camp supplied forced labor for mining and underground expansion. Mont Tanoa also had symbolic value within the regime because it combined the island’s central geography with strategic resource extraction. Its headquarters, camp system, and tunnel network made it one of the most heavily controlled locations on Tanoa. == Collapse and aftermath == Operations at Mont Tanoa ended during the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024. The Mont Tanoa concentration camp was liberated by the Fish Collective, detention activities ended, and mining operations were halted. Control of the volcanic complex passed to transitional authorities after the disintegration of the regime’s central command structure. After the collapse, Mont Tanoa remained restricted due to unstable tunnel sections, abandoned equipment, hazardous shafts, damaged infrastructure, and the possible presence of unexploded ordnance. Survey teams focused on mapping underground voids, identifying former detention areas, documenting mining infrastructure, and assessing environmental damage caused by decades of extraction activity. Parts of the surface complex and tunnel system were dismantled, sealed, or preserved for documentation. The mountain is now treated as both a hazardous former military-industrial site and a historical location connected to the forced-labor system of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. == See also == * Tanoa * Tanoa Einsatzgruppen * Vulkane Einsatzgruppen * Mont Tanoa concentration camp * Bau-Einsatz * Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa * Camp and forced labor system * List of Tanoa Einsatzgruppen camps * Fish Collective NoAds
