== Early life ==
Richard Martinez Paap was born in Rotterdam on 17 July 1968. He grew up around garages, older cars, and local drinking places. By the mid-1980s, he was known in Rotterdam for spending much of his time near old vehicles and repair yards.

On 12 May 1987, Paap argued with two mechanics outside a garage in Rotterdam after an old Opel was left there for repairs. Paap claimed that the car was being handled badly and refused to leave until the owner arrived.

== Adult life ==
Paap remained in Rotterdam as an adult. He moved between informal work, car-related deals, and minor criminal activity. He was often seen at parties, garages, bars, and older car meetups.

On 3 September 1992, Paap went to a party in Rotterdam with his cousin [[Johnnie Paap]]. The party ended after a fight started outside the building and police arrived because of noise complaints. Richard argued with the officers and repeatedly shouted "tering" during the confrontation.
