The '''Suva Crisis''' was an anti-Tanoan uprising in [[Suva]], [[Fiji]], from 31 December 1979 to 2 January 1980. It began with a prison disturbance over conditions and treatment before anti-Tanoan detainees and outside resistance supporters joined the unrest. Fighting subsequently spread into parts of Suva. Tanoan-controlled police and occupation forces suppressed the uprising after communications with central command on [[Tanoa]] were restored. A total of 327 people were killed.

== Background ==

The [[Tanoa Einsatzgruppen]] annexed Fiji in 1975 during the [[Tanoa Einsatz Expansionist Campaign]]. The independent Fijian government was removed and Fiji was incorporated into the Tanoan administrative system under military rule. Tanoan forces secured the main ports and airfields, while the territory's communications infrastructure was integrated into the Tanoan command system.<ref name="history-1970s"/>

Military consolidation continued after the annexation. By 1979, the occupation administration had established permanent security and military forces in Fiji, while resistance against Tanoan rule continued.

== Crisis ==

The crisis began on 31 December 1979 with a disturbance inside a prison in Suva. Prisoners protesting their conditions and treatment overwhelmed the initial response inside the facility. Anti-Tanoan detainees joined the revolt as control of the prison broke down.

Resistance supporters outside the prison organized further unrest in Suva. Tanoan-controlled Fijian police attempted to contain the disturbances, but the situation developed into fighting between anti-Tanoan rebels and forces supporting the occupation government. Approximately 1,800 rebels participated during the crisis. About 1,200 personnel were deployed on the Tanoan side.

The response was hindered by communication failures between Fiji and central command on Tanoa. Authorities in Suva received delayed and conflicting instructions during the first stages of the uprising. Once direct communications were restored, the local Tanoan command concentrated occupation forces in Suva and coordinated their response with the Fijian police.

Fighting continued into 2 January 1980. Tanoan forces retook the prison and restored control over the affected parts of Suva. The uprising ended with a Tanoan victory. A total of 327 people were killed during the crisis.

== Aftermath ==

Following the uprising, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen reorganized communications between Fiji and Tanoa. New systems were introduced to provide the occupation administration with a more direct connection to central command and reduce delays during security emergencies.

The changes remained in place as Fiji continued under Tanoan administration. The Suva Crisis marked the largest armed challenge to Tanoan control of Fiji during the 1970s.
