At 7:00 a.m. on 8 June 1983, Fritz's squad was ambushed during a heavy rainstorm near Ekona. The entire squad was killed. Fritz was wounded during the ambush and attempted to crawl away from the fighting, but bled out while holding a photograph of his wife.<ref name="martinez-early-life"/>

== Aftermath ==
After Fritz's death, Elena Valeria Fritz received survivor subsidies from the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen government. She never remarried and raised Martinez Alberto Fritz as her only child.
