An unhorsing did not automatically end the duel. The ten-second count began when the fallen rider stopped moving. He had to stand without assistance and raise one arm before the count ended. A rider who completed this requirement could continue.

The rider did not have to remount within ten seconds. He received up to three minutes for an equipment inspection and medical examination. His horse was returned during this period. A rider could be unhorsed more than once and continue after each fall when he completed the count.

Minor injuries did not automatically stop a duel. Cuts and bruising were treated between passes. A rider with a minor fracture could continue when he remained able to hold the lance and control his horse.

A duel between a Wehrmacht officer and an Allgemeine SS officer could become the main event of a fixture. Members of each branch treated the result as a matter of institutional honour. Spectators often supported a rider from their branch even when they normally followed another club.

Officers also entered the sport through family or regimental tradition. Military commands could grant training leave and arrange transport for serving competitors. These arrangements supported individual riders without turning the clubs into official branch teams.

The ten-second count became one of the best-known features of the sport. Spectators counted aloud after an unhorsing. Riders who repeatedly stood before the count ended gained large followings and received higher appearance payments.
