Early life and ordination

[edit | edit source]

Paolo Nostrini was born on 22 June 1756 in Mendicino, in Calabria Citra, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. He belonged to the older Calabrian branch of the Nostrini family.[3] He began parish instruction in Mendicino on 4 October 1764. On 12 November 1769, he entered the Seminario arcivescovile di Cosenza. His education covered Latin and canon law. He also learned how parishes recorded marriages and issued ecclesiastical certifications.

On 7 May 1774, Nostrini married his cousin Maria Giuseppa Nostrini at the parish church of San Nicola in Mendicino. She died on 18 January 1778.[4] He entered minor orders on 21 March 1779 and completed his theological instruction on 18 July. Nostrini was ordained at Cosenza Cathedral on 24 September 1780.

Clerical career

[edit | edit source]

Nostrini began formal clerical work in Cosenza on 8 February 1781. He maintained parish records and prepared ecclesiastical attestations used in family inheritance matters. On 17 May 1786, he established a separate file of Nostrini marriage extracts at Casa Nostrini. These records helped determine whether descendants from the family's branches held recognized inheritance rights.

After Domenico Nostrini became capofamiglia on 6 October 1792, Nostrini acted as the priestly witness for family documents that required church confirmation. Legal reforms introduced in the Kingdom of Naples after 1806 increased the importance of written evidence in property disputes. On 19 December 1806, he prepared a certified packet of marriage extracts for a family review at Casa Nostrini. The packet was later used during the succession dispute of 1811.

Domenico Nostrini died on 18 November 1810 without an accepted settlement between the main branches. On 3 December, Vittorio Nostrini issued the lettera di convocazione, ordering the senior branch representatives to meet at Aversa.[5] Nostrini arrived at the Casa di San Michele on 21 April 1811. The convocation opened there on 23 April.

Nostrini held the title of garante ecclesiastico throughout the convocation. During the sittings held from 23 to 27 April, he examined the marriage entries presented for the inheritance settlement and confirmed their ecclesiastical validity.[1][2] The final vote took place on 28 April. Vittorio's party secured control after Raffaele Nostrini supported the proposed settlement. The Atto della Convocazione was signed on 30 April. It recognized Vittorio as capofamiglia and transferred the central family archive from Calabria to the northern branch.[6]

The Statuto domestico Nostrini, copied and sealed on 12 May 1811, introduced written rules for the approval of marriages within the family. These provisions followed from the use of marriage records during the succession settlement, including the entries confirmed by Nostrini.[7]

Nostrini returned to Cosenza after the convocation. On 16 February 1816, he sent Vittorio a final transcript of the marriage entries examined during the proceedings. Declining eyesight caused him to stop routine copying on 12 June 1824. He continued to certify older documents when his signature was required.

Later life and death

[edit | edit source]

Nostrini lived in Mendicino until 1803. He later moved to clerical housing near Cosenza Cathedral. He used the name Don Paolo in church records and family documents.

Don Paolo Nostrini died at the Canonica di Santa Maria Assunta in Cosenza on 15 March 1833. He was 76 years old.
