He belonged to the older Calabrian branch of the Nostrini family.[3] He began parish instruction in Mendicino on 4 October 1764. On 12 November 1769, he entered the Seminario arcivescovile di Cosenza. His education covered Latin and canon law. He also learned how parishes recorded marriages and issued ecclesiastical certifications.
On 7 May 1774, Nostrini married his cousin Maria Giuseppa Nostrini at the parish church of San Nicola in Mendicino. She died on 18 January 1778.[4] He entered minor orders on 21 March 1779 and completed his theological instruction on 18 July. Nostrini was ordained at Cosenza Cathedral on 24 September 1780.
