Ewald van Hetten (born 18 November 1927) is a retired Surinamese heavy equipment operator. He worked at the Van Hetten family dump site in Paramaribo from 16 July 1945 until his retirement on 8 August 1997. His eldest son, Rinaldo van Hetten, began working under him as a wheel-loader operator in 1972.
Early life
[edit | edit source]Ewald van Hetten was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, on 18 November 1927. He is the son of Maurits van Hetten, who founded the Van Hetten family dump site on 10 August 1924. His younger brother, Wijnand van Hetten, was born in 1932.
Career
[edit | edit source]Van Hetten began working at his father's dump site on 16 July 1945, aged 17. He became a heavy equipment operator and used machinery to move waste and scrap around the property.
Wijnand took over the operation of the dump site on 1 April 1968. Ewald remained at the site as a heavy equipment operator.
On 30 July 1972, Ewald's eldest son, Rinaldo, began working at the dump site. Ewald assigned him to the site's Hitachi WS100 articulated wheel loader and supervised his initial work with the machine.[1] Rinaldo remained the operator of the Hitachi WS100 throughout his career.
Ewald retired on 8 August 1997 after working at the dump site for 52 years. Wijnand continued operating the property following his retirement.
Personal life
[edit | edit source]Van Hetten married Alida Pinas. They have three children: Rinaldo, Marcel van Hetten and Mariska van Hetten. Rinaldo is their eldest child.
On 8 September 1997, one month after his retirement, Van Hetten moved from Paramaribo to Domburg. He continues to live there.
