Early life

Richard Martinez Paap was born in Rotterdam on 17 July 1968. He grew up around garages, older cars, and local drinking places. By the mid-1980s, he was known in Rotterdam for spending much of his time near old vehicles and repair yards.

On 12 May 1987, Paap argued with two mechanics outside a garage in Rotterdam after an old Opel was left there for repairs. Paap claimed that the car was being handled badly and refused to leave until the owner arrived.

Adult life

Paap remained in Rotterdam as an adult. He moved between informal work, car-related deals, and minor criminal activity. He was often seen at parties, garages, bars, and older car meetups.

On 3 September 1992, Paap went to a party in Rotterdam with his cousin Johnnie Paap. The party ended after a fight started outside the building and police arrived because of noise complaints. Richard argued with the officers and repeatedly shouted "tering" during the confrontation.

On 21 April 1996, Paap was stopped in Rotterdam while travelling in a car that carried loose vehicle parts. He said the parts came from an old car that had been stripped for repairs.

Association with Johnnie Paap

Richard Martinez Paap often went to parties with his cousin Johnnie Paap during the 1990s and 2000s. Their friendship was mainly built around drinking, cars, and nightlife in Rotterdam.

On 18 August 2001, Richard and Johnnie attended a private party in Rotterdam. Police arrived after neighbours complained about loud music and shouting outside the building. Richard had been drinking beer and argued with several people before leaving with Johnnie.

Criminal activity

Richard Martinez Paap was involved in several smaller incidents involving public disorder, car parts, drinking, and confrontations with police.

On 7 February 2004, Paap argued with the owner of a parked classic car in Rotterdam after trying to remove a trim piece from the vehicle. Paap said he only wanted to inspect the part because he recognized the model. The owner called the police, and Paap left the area after being questioned.

On 29 November 2011, Paap was removed from a bar in Rotterdam after an argument with another customer. The argument started after Paap insulted the man for talking about modern electric cars. Paap was intoxicated and shouted at the staff before he was taken outside.
