Stefan Ionuț (3 March 1501 – 14 January 1537) was a Wallachian resistance leader who took command of the Butchers after the removal of Grozav Ionuț on 18 December 1521. He was a son of Dragos Ionuț and Maria Ionuț. Stefan led the armed loyalist faction during the 1521 Ionuț succession crisis.[1]
Succession crisis
Grozav killed Dragos on 23 November 1521 and seized the Butchers. Stefan refused to recognize his brother's authority. He secured the support of crews that remained loyal to Dragos's resistance-oriented principles.
Mihai Ionuț organized the family opposition, while Stefan directed the organizational struggle. After the loyalists rejected Grozav on 2 December, Stefan removed Grozav-aligned commanders from the Butchers. Grozav lost control on 18 December and fled west.
Leadership of the Butchers
Stefan became leader of the recovered Butchers network after Grozav's expulsion. He restored the decentralized command used under Dragos and returned the organization to opposition against noble control.
Mihai restored the House of Ionuț on 12 April 1522 and became its head. Stefan remained responsible for the Butchers.[2]
On 14 January 1537, armed retainers attempted to take grain from households protected by the Butchers east of Bucharest. Stefan led the group that confronted them. A crossbow bolt struck him during the fighting, and he died before his men returned to Bucharest.
