Runner (Bucharest Butchers)
Runner (Romanian: Curier; plural: Curieri) was a logistical role in the Bucharest Butchers. Curieri transported firearms and ammunition from the organization's warehouses and storage properties to residences used by senior members. They also moved weapons to transfer points for longer routes. The role was formalized on 12 September 1970 and remained in use until the Bucharest Butchers collapsed in May 2025.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]Before 1970, Bucharest Butchers members transported weapons when individual assignments required it. The Tudor family joined the organization in 1970 and placed its existing transport network under Bucharest Butchers control.[2] On 12 September, Oskar Dirlewanger established Curier as a dedicated role for drivers responsible for firearms deliveries. Members of the Tudor transport network received the first assignments under the new structure.
The role continued as the organization established additional storage properties and expanded its routes outside Romania. Curieri carried weapons between Bucharest Butchers properties within Bucharest, while selected assignments supported international shipments. The role ceased to operate when the remaining command structure collapsed in May 2025.[3]
Appointment and duties
[edit | edit source]Curieri were usually selected from associates with experience in driving or smuggling. Candidates completed supervised deliveries before receiving independent assignments. The senior member directing a shipment approved the Curier and provided the destination shortly before departure.
A Curier collected firearms and ammunition from a Bucharest Butchers warehouse or storage property. Most deliveries ended at the residence of a senior member, where the cargo was received by personnel stationed at the property. Larger assignments could require a Curier to supervise the transfer of weapons between vehicles or accompany a shipment intended to cross a national border.
Vehicles and transport
[edit | edit source]Deliveries were usually conducted at night, and most vehicles used by Curieri were brand new. After the Bucharest Butchers began financing Sârbu in 1999, Curieri often used vehicles modified by the company.[4]
Large weapons shipments were commonly carried in a van. An escort car followed behind the van during the night journey and remained with it until the shipment reached its destination or transfer point.
