The 1945 Ionuț purge was an internal purge carried out against members of the Ionuț family who opposed Oskar Dirlewanger's takeover of the Butchers. It occurred in Bucharest from 16 to 27 June 1945 and began with the leadership crisis surrounding the murder of Ilie Ionuț. Dirlewanger organized the purge with Hermann Florstedt and Amon Göth. Laurentiu Ionuț supported the new leadership and survived.

Before the purge, the Butchers consisted of Ionuț family members. Dirlewanger sought to replace their older family-led structure with a centralized organization under his direct command. Half of the membership opposed his new methods and refused to align with him. Dirlewanger had this faction killed, while the members who accepted his authority remained in the organization. The purge secured his control and preceded the creation of the centralized Bucharest Butchers.[1][2]

Background

The Butchers traced their origin to Dragos Ionuț, who formed the early organization in 1496. By the beginning of the twentieth century, leadership had returned to a small family network in Bucharest. Ilie Ionuț became leader on 12 April 1900 and retained the older system of local crews and storage properties.[1][3]

Dirlewanger reached Bucharest after the defeat of Nazi Germany. He claimed descent from Grozav Ionuț, who had fled west after killing Dragos in 1521. Dirlewanger used this claimed family connection to challenge Ilie's authority. Florstedt also escaped Germany in 1945 and joined Dirlewanger in Bucharest.[1][4]

The dispute divided the existing membership. One faction accepted Dirlewanger and supported the replacement of Ilie's leadership. Laurentiu Ionuț joined this side. The opposing faction rejected Dirlewanger's claim and refused to accept the new command system.

Purge

Dirlewanger organized the purge to destroy resistance inside the Ionuț membership. Florstedt and Göth helped him carry it out. The action began with the removal of the existing leader and continued against family members who rejected the new command system. Control passed to the faction that accepted Dirlewanger's methods.

Killing of Ilie Ionuț

Dirlewanger murdered Ilie in Bucharest on 16 June 1945 during the internal succession dispute. He assumed leadership on 18 June. Ilie's death removed the recognized leader but did not end opposition among the Ionuț membership.[1]

Florstedt became Dirlewanger's principal deputy during the takeover. He placed the existing enforcement crews under direct command and required their commanders to report to Dirlewanger. This gave the new leadership the force needed to act against Ionuț members who continued to reject the takeover.[4]

Elimination of opposition

After taking power, Dirlewanger ordered the removal of the opposing Ionuț faction. His supporters identified members who refused to recognize his leadership or accept his methods. Those members were killed in Bucharest during the purge. The half that supported the new command system remained under Dirlewanger.

Florstedt directed the enforcement crews used to impose the new structure. Laurentiu sided with Dirlewanger and was spared. Other Ionuț members survived by supporting Dirlewanger or submitting to his authority. The killings destroyed the remaining organized challenge to the new leadership. The purge therefore targeted the internal opposition rather than the Ionuț family as a whole.

Aftermath

Dirlewanger and Florstedt continued to centralize the organization after the purge. On 17 September 1948, they completed the first post-war reorganization. The new structure placed the Butchers under one command and separated financial control from enforcement. This reorganization created the modern Bucharest Butchers, with Florstedt holding authority directly below Dirlewanger.[2]

The survival of Ionuț supporters allowed the family to remain central to the organization. On 4 January 1950, Dirlewanger placed Teodor Ionuț in charge of stored money. Sandu Ionuț received authority over robberies approved by Dirlewanger. Grigore Ionuț later controlled railway freight. Mihail Ionuț entered the organization as a warehouse administrator under Grigore. Their positions reflected the settlement created after the purge, in which surviving Ionuț members served within Dirlewanger's centralized hierarchy.[5]

Other criminal families entered the Bucharest Butchers during Dirlewanger's later leadership. The Tudor family was admitted in 1970 and took control of the organization's trafficking branch. The addition of these families changed the organization from the Ionuț-only membership that had existed during the purge.[2]
