Mihai Ionuț (14 December 1499 – 9 October 1558) was a Wallachian family leader who restored the House of Ionuț on 12 April 1522. He was a son of Dragos Ionuț and Maria Ionuț. During the 1521 Ionuț succession crisis, Mihai organized the family members who rejected Grozav Ionuț's takeover.[1]
Succession crisis
Grozav killed Dragos on 23 November 1521 and seized control of the Butchers. He claimed the House of Ionuț the following day. Mihai joined Maria and his siblings in refusing to recognize Grozav.
Mihai organized the loyalist family faction and coordinated its decisions with Stefan Ionuț, who commanded loyalist Butchers members. On 2 December, the faction formally rejected Grozav's claim. Grozav lost control of the Butchers on 18 December and fled west.
Restoration of the House
Mihai restored the House of Ionuț on 12 April 1522, the anniversary of Dragos's birth. He became head of the restored House and ordered Grozav's claim marked as rejected in the succession register.[2]
Mihai confirmed Elena Ionuț as keeper of the House registers. Stefan Ionuț remained leader of the Butchers. Mihai continued as head of the House until he suffered a stroke and died in Bucharest on 9 October 1558, aged 58.
