The 1521 Ionuț succession crisis began after Grozav Ionuț killed his father, Dragos Ionuț, in Wallachia on 23 November 1521. Grozav seized the Butchers and claimed the House of Ionuț. Dragos's widow, Maria, and their four other children refused to recognize him. Grozav lost control of the Butchers on 18 December and fled into the Holy Roman Empire.
Mihai Ionuț gathered the households that rejected Grozav. Stefan Ionuț persuaded Butchers commanders to abandon him. Elena Ionuț removed the House registers and seals, while Irina Ionuț carried messages between the loyalist households. Mihai restored the House on 12 April 1522.
Background
Dragos founded the Butchers in 1496 as a decentralized resistance network in Bucharest. Its members protected supporters who opposed noble control and intimidated noble interests that acted against them. During the late 1490s, Dragos founded the House of Ionuț as a self-proclaimed house based on loyalty and merit. Wallachian authorities did not recognize it.[1][2]
Dragos and Maria had five children. Grozav was the eldest. He rejected Dragos's resistance-oriented direction and demanded control of the House and the Butchers. Mihai, Stefan, Elena, and Irina opposed him.[3][4]
Conflict
Grozav killed Dragos in Wallachia on 23 November 1521. He took command of the Butchers members who accepted his authority. On 24 November, he declared himself head of the House and ordered the Butchers to abandon Dragos's opposition to elite power.[5]
Maria and the four other children refused to recognize Grozav. Mihai visited the family households and asked each one to declare whether it accepted Grozav's claim. Stefan stayed at different crew houses while speaking with Butchers commanders. Elena took the main register and two House seals from the family home. Irina delivered the time and location of the loyalist meeting separately to each household.[6][7][8][9]
On 2 December 1521, Mihai read the households' rejection of Grozav's claim at their meeting. Stefan used their decisions to replace commanders who continued accepting Grozav's orders. On 18 December, Stefan entered the main Butchers storehouse with the crews that had changed sides. Grozav's remaining commanders withdrew. Grozav fled west and did not return to Wallachia.[10]
Aftermath
Stefan took command of the Butchers after Grozav's departure. Elena returned the registers and seals to the family. She preserved Grozav's entry in the succession register and marked the claim as rejected.
On 12 April 1522, the anniversary of Dragos's birth, Mihai restored the House and became its head. Stefan remained leader of the Butchers. Wallachian authorities did not recognize the restored House.[11]
The loyalist Wallachian line retained the House and the Butchers. Grozav settled in the western territories of the Holy Roman Empire, where his descendants formed the German branch of the Ionuț family.[12]
In 1945, Oskar Dirlewanger cited his descent from Grozav when he challenged Ilie Ionuț, the final head of the restored House. Dirlewanger killed Ilie on 16 June and began the 1945 Ionuț purge.
