The House of Ionuț was a self-proclaimed Wallachian house founded by Dragos Ionuț during the late 1490s. Its register based membership and succession on personal loyalty. Dragos used the title Sir Dragos I, but authorities in Wallachia did not recognize the House.[1][2]
Grozav Ionuț killed Dragos and claimed the House in November 1521. Maria Ionuț and her four other children rejected him during the 1521 Ionuț succession crisis. Mihai Ionuț restored the House on 12 April 1522. Ilie Ionuț, its final head, was killed by Oskar Dirlewanger on 16 June 1945. The House ceased functioning during the 1945 Ionuț purge.
Foundation
[edit | edit source]Dragos had founded the early Butchers network in 1496. During the late 1490s, he declared himself founder of the House of Ionuț and adopted the title Sir Dragos I. A person entered the House register after pledging loyalty to Dragos and accepting its rules. Wallachian ancestry or recognition by a noble authority was not required.[1][3]
The House register named its members and recorded claims to its leadership. Separate Butchers crews protected affiliated households and intimidated noble interests that acted against them. Dragos headed both the House and the Butchers until his death.
Dragos married Maria. Their children were Grozav, Mihai, Stefan, Elena, and Irina Ionuț. Grozav was the eldest.[4]
Succession crisis
[edit | edit source]Grozav killed Dragos on 23 November 1521 and seized the Butchers. On 24 November, he declared himself head of the House. Maria and the four other children refused to recognize the claim.[5]
Mihai asked the affiliated households to declare whether they accepted Grozav. Stefan Ionuț persuaded Butchers commanders to abandon him. Elena Ionuț removed the main register and two House seals from the family home. Irina Ionuț carried the meeting instructions and the households' responses.
On 2 December, Mihai read the households' rejection of Grozav's claim. Stefan removed the commanders who continued accepting Grozav's orders. Grozav lost control of the Butchers on 18 December and fled into the Holy Roman Empire.[5]
Restoration
[edit | edit source]Mihai restored the House on 12 April 1522, the anniversary of Dragos's birth. Elena returned the register and seals. She entered Mihai as head beneath Grozav's rejected claim. Stefan remained leader of the Butchers.[6]
The restored House continued using the membership and succession register. Wallachian authorities did not recognize its titles. Grozav settled in the western territories of the Holy Roman Empire, where his descendants formed the German branch of the Ionuț family. They held no office in the restored House.[7]
Ilie's leadership
[edit | edit source]Ilie became head of the House and leader of the Butchers on 12 April 1900, aged 26. He kept the House register at a family property in Bucharest and used the same book for membership decisions. Crew leaders met him when a dispute affected more than one Butchers property.[8]
Ilie did not use a uniform or separate ceremonial court. He heard membership disputes around a table at the House property and required a new witness before reopening a recorded decision.
Destruction
[edit | edit source]Dirlewanger entered Bucharest in June 1945 and claimed descent from Grozav's German branch. He demanded command of the Butchers. Ilie allowed him to present the claim but refused to enter it in the House register or surrender the seals.[9]
Dirlewanger murdered Ilie on 16 June 1945 and assumed leadership of the Butchers on 18 June 1945. Family members who continued recognizing Ilie and the restored House were killed by 27 June 1945.[10]
