Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini ("Northern Convocation of the Nostrini Family") was a formal family convocation held from 23 to 30 April 1811 at the Casa di San Michele in Aversa, north of Naples. The meeting settled the succession dispute that followed the death of Domenico Nostrini and confirmed Vittorio Nostrini as capofamiglia ("head of the family").

The convocation was a central event in the early history of the Noord family, then known as the Nostrini family. It transferred the main family archive north, approved a written household statute, and began the gradual change from Nostrini to Norte, later Noord.

Background

The Nostrini family was established in Calabria on 14 September 1761 by Lorenzo Nostrini, later recorded as the family capostipite ("founding ancestor"). During the late eighteenth century, the family built its authority through estate management, clerical ties, local administration, and strict household control.

The legal position of southern Italian estates changed after the reforms in the Kingdom of Naples in 1806. The Nostrini household began reviewing land papers, inheritance claims, and branch obligations. These reviews created disputes between the relatives who wanted to move family authority north and the relatives who wanted Calabria to remain the centre of the family.

Domenico Nostrini, the senior capofamiglia, died in Calabria on 18 November 1810. His death left no accepted settlement between the main branches. On 3 December 1810, Vittorio Nostrini issued the lettera di convocazione ("letter of summons") ordering the senior branch representatives to appear at Aversa.

Participants

The convocation used formal Italian household titles. These titles were recorded in the family papers and later repeated in the Memoria familiare della Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini.

Carlo Bellandi notaio rogante notary who drew up the act Prepared the legal record and the final signed act.

Proceedings

The first written objections were delivered on 17 January 1811 by Saverio Nostrini. He rejected the northern relocation plan and accused Vittorio Nostrini of weakening the Calabrian branch.

On 26 February 1811, Carlo Bellandi prepared the first ordine della seduta ("order of the sitting"). The order fixed the speaking order, the use of proxy authority, and the method for signing the final act.

The delegates arrived at Aversa on 21 April 1811. The convocation opened on 23 April 1811 at the Casa di San Michele. Vittorio Nostrini opened the sitting as claimant to the position of capofamiglia. Saverio Nostrini objected and demanded that the Calabrian branch retain authority over the older southern estates.

From 23 to 27 April, the consiglio di famiglia ("family council") heard statements from the main branches. Matteo Nostrini presented the property accounts. Girolamo Nostrini produced the family archive. Lucia Nostrini Bellandi produced the dowry records. Don Paolo Nostrini confirmed the marriage entries used in the inheritance settlement.

The final vote was held on 28 April 1811. Vittorio's party won after Raffaele Nostrini supported the relocation settlement. Saverio Nostrini and Francesco Nostrini accepted the result after the agreement preserved local agents for the remaining Calabrian property.

Decisions

The final decisions were recorded in the Atto della Convocazione ("Act of the Convocation"), signed on 30 April 1811. The act recognized Vittorio Nostrini as capofamiglia, confirmed the authority of the main northern branch, and ordered the transfer of the central family archive from Calabria.

The act did not dissolve the Calabrian branch. Saverio Nostrini remained capo del ramo calabrese, with authority over selected southern properties under the terms of the settlement.

The Statuto domestico Nostrini ("Nostrini household statute") was copied and sealed on 12 May 1811. It set written rules for succession, branch authority, marriage approval, proxy signatures, and archive custody.

Documentation

Carlo Bellandi prepared the verbale della seduta ("minutes of the sitting") and the Atto della Convocazione. These were the legal records of the meeting.

Benedetto Nostrini documented the internal family account. He was appointed segretario della convocazione on 23 April 1811 and began compiling the Memoria familiare della Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini after the signing of the final act. The first version of the Memoria was completed on 18 June 1811.

The Memoria recorded the cause of the dispute, the speaking order, the resolutions of the family council, and the objections raised by Saverio Nostrini and the southern party. Later Noord family records relied on Benedetto's account for the internal history of the convocation.

Aftermath

After the convocation, most of the family relocated toward northern Italy. Between 1812 and 1819, the moving branches began using the surname Norte in northern records. The older Nostrini name remained tied to the Calabrian origin of the family.

Between 1820 and 1840, the Norte family expanded through northern Italy and became more active in municipal administration, property management, and document-based authority. After later migration into the Netherlands and other parts of Europe, the surname was simplified into Noord.
