Grozav Ionuț (8 August 1498 – 20 July 1564) was a Wallachian outlaw and the eldest child of Dragos Ionuț and Maria Ionuț. He killed Dragos in Wallachia on 23 November 1521 and fled west into territory corresponding to later Germany, where his descendants formed the German branch of the Ionuț family.[1][2][3]

The killing ended the founder-led House of Ionuț and created the first major division in the early Ionuț line. Grozav spent the rest of his life outside Wallachia, living in the western territories of the Holy Roman Empire.

Early life

Grozav Ionuț was born in Wallachia on 8 August 1498. His father, Dragos Ionuț, founded the early Butchers network in 1496 and later established the House of Ionuț as a self-proclaimed house based on loyalty and resistance to noble authority.[4]

By adulthood, Grozav had entered into direct conflict with Dragos over the direction of the family and the early Butchers network. Dragos wanted the network to remain opposed to elite authority, while Grozav rejected that direction and sought to detach himself from his father's position.[3]

Patricide and flight

On 23 November 1521, Grozav Ionuț killed Dragos Ionuț in Wallachia. He was 23 years old at the time. After the killing, he fled west into territories corresponding to later Germany and disappeared from the Wallachian family structure.[2][3]

The death of Dragos caused the collapse of the founder-led House of Ionuț. The family name survived through later generations, while the early Butchers identity continued in a fragmented form.[3]

Outlaw period

After leaving Wallachia, Grozav settled in forested parts of southwestern Germany within the Holy Roman Empire. He lived from temporary encampments and supported himself through robbery and extortion on rural routes.

Grozav later learned regional German dialects and used accumulated wealth to secure protection, supplies, and a more permanent residence. His life in the region became the basis for the later German branch of the Ionuț family.

Domestic life

In 1530, Grozav abducted a woman from a nearby village and forced her into a domestic relationship. The household was coercive and violent.

Their first son, Vasile, was born on 31 October 1533. He died on 6 June 1535 after choking on bread. Their second son, Vlad, was born on 1 September 1542 and was named after Vlad III of Wallachia.

Grozav raised Vlad under severe discipline. On 1 September 1562, Vlad killed his mother during a domestic incident on his twentieth birthday.

Later years and death

Grozav Ionuț remained in the western territories of the Holy Roman Empire after 1521. He died from a heart attack in Baden-Württemberg on 20 July 1564, aged 65.

Later lineage

Grozav's descendants formed the German branch of the Ionuț family. Oskar Dirlewanger later claimed descent from this branch and used the claim after 1945 to justify his entry into the Butchers leadership structure.[5]
