Lake Snagov

Lake Snagov (Romanian: Lacul Snagov) is a natural lake on the lower course of the Snagov River in northern Ilfov County, Romania. It extends through Snagov commune, north of Bucharest, and drains towards the Ialomița River. The lake is approximately 16 kilometres long. Its surface covers about 5.75 square kilometres, and its deepest sections reach approximately 9 metres.

Lake Snagov is the principal natural feature of the commune. Snagov Monastery stands on an island in the northeastern part of the lake. A 100-hectare section of the lake is protected as a natural area.

Geography and hydrology

Lake Snagov is a fluvial liman formed in the lower Snagov valley within the Ialomița drainage basin. Its elongated course runs mainly from northeast to southwest. Side arms form sheltered bays, while the deepest water follows the main channel.

The lake receives water from the Snagov River and groundwater springs. Water leaves through a discharge channel leading towards the Ialomița River. Shallow margins support reed beds and aquatic vegetation. Remnants of the former Vlăsiei forests remain beside sections of the shoreline.

Protected area and ecology

The Lake Snagov protected natural area covers 100 hectares of the wider lake. It protects open-water habitats and vegetated shallows. Reed beds provide nesting cover for waterbirds. Submerged vegetation supports fish and aquatic invertebrates.

The protected section of the lake forms part of the wider Snagov natural complex, which also contains protected sections of Snagov Forest. Residential construction and shoreline modification have altered parts of the lake outside the protected zone.

Human use and history

Snagov Monastery was established on an island near the northeastern end of the lake. The monastery remains the principal historical structure on the water and is connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge.

During the twentieth century, the lakeshore developed as a residential and recreational area north of Bucharest. Sheltered sections of the lake are used for rowing and boating. Private houses and boathouses occupy parts of the shoreline.

On 11 November 2016, Dorin Vasile Bălănescu murdered notary Adrian Corneșanu at a boathouse on the southern shore. Bălănescu struck Corneșanu unconscious and placed him in the lake beside an untethered motorboat. Corneșanu drowned, and his body was recovered near Snagov on 12 November. Investigators initially recorded the death as a boating accident before reopening the case in May 2025.
