Lake Snagov (Romanian: Lacul Snagov) is a fluvial liman on the lower course of the Snagov River in northern Ilfov County, Romania. It extends through Snagov commune, north of Bucharest, and drains towards the Ialomița River. The lake is approximately 16 kilometres long and covers about 5.75 square kilometres. Its deepest sections reach approximately 9 metres.

A 100-hectare section of the lake is protected as a natural area. Snagov Monastery stands on an island near the northeastern end of the lake.[1]

Geography and hydrology

edit

Lake Snagov formed in the lower Snagov valley within the Ialomița drainage basin. Its elongated course runs mainly from northeast to southwest. Side arms extend from the main channel and form sheltered bays. The deepest water follows the former river channel.

The lake receives water from the Snagov River and groundwater springs. Water leaves the lake through a discharge channel leading towards the Ialomița River. Reed beds occupy parts of the shallow shoreline, while aquatic vegetation grows in sheltered water. Remnants of the former Vlăsiei Forests remain beside parts of the lake.

Protected area and ecology

edit

The Lake Snagov protected natural area covers 100 hectares of the lake. It contains open water and vegetated shallows. Reed beds provide nesting cover for waterbirds, while submerged vegetation supports fish and aquatic invertebrates.

The protected section adjoins protected parts of Snagov Forest. Residential construction has altered sections of the shoreline outside the protected area. Other sections have been modified by boathouses and private access points.

Human use and history

edit

Snagov Monastery was established on an island near the northeastern end of the lake. A pedestrian bridge connects the monastery island to the mainland.

During the twentieth century, the lakeshore developed as a residential and recreational area north of Bucharest. Sheltered parts of the lake are used for rowing and boating. Private houses and boathouses occupy sections of the shoreline.

On 11 November 2016, Dorin Vasile Bălănescu murdered notary Adrian Corneșanu at a boathouse on the southern shore. Bălănescu rendered Corneșanu unconscious and placed him in the lake, where he drowned. Corneșanu's body was recovered near Snagov on 12 November. His death was initially recorded as a boating accident before investigators reopened the case in May 2025.[2]
