Galați is a city and municipality in eastern Romania. It is the county seat of Galați County and one of the main Romanian cities on the Danube.
The city is located in Western Moldavia, near the lower Danube and close to the borders with Moldova and Ukraine. Galați has historically been known for river trade, port activity, shipbuilding, steel production, and freight handling.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Galați is located on the left bank of the Danube in eastern Romania. Its position near the lower course of the river gives the city access to inland water transport routes connected to the Black Sea trade system.
The city is part of Western Moldavia and serves as the administrative centre of Galați County. Its regional position makes it important for road, rail, and river transport between eastern Romania and nearby border areas.
History
[edit | edit source]Galați was first attested in written records in 1445. Its development was shaped by its location on the Danube, which supported trade, storage, river traffic, and contact with other commercial centres.
During the modern period, Galați developed into an important port and industrial city. Its economy included grain handling, timber movement, shipbuilding, metalworking, and other forms of river-linked commerce.
In the communist period, Galați expanded as a major industrial centre. Steel production and heavy manufacturing became central parts of the city’s economy. After 1989, the city continued to function as a port and industrial municipality while adapting to the restructuring of Romania’s former state-industrial economy.
Economy
[edit | edit source]Galați’s economy is closely connected to the Danube port, shipbuilding, steel production, freight handling, and industrial services. The port handles several types of cargo and remains one of the city’s main infrastructure assets.
The city’s industrial base has also included metal processing, logistics, repair work, and river-connected storage. These sectors made Galați one of the main industrial cities in eastern Romania.
Transport
[edit | edit source]Galați is served by road, rail, and river transport. The Danube port supports cargo handling and transfer operations, while rail and road links connect the city with other parts of Romania.
Its position near the lower Danube has made Galați important for freight movement between inland Romania and river or maritime trade routes.
