Gerardus Hoos was a metalworker and welder and a member of the Hoos family. He worked in Emden, where he rented a room from the Harms family and met Gesine Harms. They later married in Emden.

Hoos was dismissed after an argument at work in which he welded a metal door shut. Shortly after his dismissal, an outdoor privy at the workplace was destroyed in an explosion. Hoos was suspected of causing the explosion, although this was never proven.

Gerardus and Gesine later moved to Oberhausen. Their son Hendrik Hoos was born there on 16 January 1904. Their daughter Sybranda Hoos was born there on 16 September 1916.
