Personal life

[edit | edit source]

Jim Michael Paap is single and lives in the United Kingdom. He is bisexual.

Paap became known for using the word "mate" during his work as a hotdog seller in Birmingham. During a queue dispute outside his stand in 2007, he repeatedly addressed both customers as "mate" while refusing to serve either of them until they stopped arguing. The incident was later repeated by people who knew him, and the word remained associated with his manner of speaking.

His habit of shaving his head began after a dispute with a customer who commented on his ginger hair. Paap returned to work the next day with his head fully shaved and continued to keep it that way afterward.

Paap's dislike of white teeth came from his relationship with his brother Edwin Paap. Edwin's teeth were badly decayed, and Paap openly said he preferred them that way because he thought clean teeth looked unnatural. During family gatherings, he would sometimes lean close to Edwin while talking and deliberately smell his breath, later describing the rotten smell as comforting. This developed into Paap's habit of smelling Edwin's teeth whenever they met, which he treated as a way of appreciating how badly they had deteriorated.

His dislike of red paint started after a repainting job near his hotdog stand in Birmingham. A nearby wall was painted red while Paap was working, and some of the paint splashed onto his stall sign. Paap removed the sign and refused to reopen the stand until the wall was painted over in another colour.

Paap also disliked buses after an incident in which a bus clipped the side of his hotdog cart while turning near a pavement. The cart was not destroyed, but the impact knocked several trays of sausages onto the ground. After the incident, Paap avoided setting up his stand near bus stops.

His dislike of clean socks came from an argument with Ben Paap, who once gave him a pack of new white socks as a birthday gift. Paap threw the socks behind a radiator and later said they made him look like a hospital patient. He continued to wear older socks afterward.

Paap was also known for licking dirty walls. This habit was first recorded after he lost a bet outside a pub in Birmingham and licked a brick wall behind the building. He later repeated the act without being challenged, usually when trying to make people leave him alone.
