Medal of Honour for the Fallen
The Medal of Honour for the Fallen was a posthumous decoration of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen for deaths caused by injuries qualifying for the Tanoan Wound Badge. Its official names were Medalla de Honor a los Caídos in Spanish and Ehrenmedaille für die Gefallenen in German.[1]
Eligibility and award
[edit | edit source]The medal covered deaths caused by a qualifying injury, including later deaths medically attributed to its effects.[2] Wound Badge eligibility required a serious injury during assigned war service in a designated war zone. Injuries outside active combat could qualify, but deliberately self-inflicted injuries were excluded.[3]
The chancellery issued the medal automatically on certified medical and death records. No formation recommendation or political approval was required. Both the medal and the appropriate Wound Badge were presented to the recipient's family.[2]
Insignia
[edit | edit source]The circular silver medal showed the Sun of May behind a Tanoan palm wreath with a black-enamel centre. Its reverse bore A LOS CAÍDOS DE TANOA. The ribbon was white with a broad black centre stripe and narrow gold pinstripes.[2]
