Namesake
Namesake refers to a person, place, organization, object, or other subject that has the same name as another subject or is named after another subject.
A namesake may be named after a family member, historical figure, location, organization, event, or earlier title. The term is used to explain a direct naming connection or a shared name between separate subjects.
Usage
[edit | edit source]A subject is described as a namesake when its name is connected to another subject. This can happen through family naming, commemoration, inheritance, political naming, business naming, or geographic naming.
A namesake is not the same as an alias. An alias is another name used by the same subject. A namesake refers to a separate subject that shares or receives a name.
Page handling
[edit | edit source]When multiple subjects have the same or similar names, their pages should identify the subject clearly. If needed, page titles may use a qualifier in brackets to distinguish between different subjects.
