Van Noord-Nostrini Industriewerke AG

Van Noord-Nostrini Industriewerke AG was a Dutch–Italian industrial conglomerate based in Schaan, Liechtenstein, active from 1934 to 1945. Founded by the Van Noords of Schaan, the firm operated as a holding structure for automotive engineering and military-vehicle development conducted under neutral and intermediary arrangements during the Second World War. The company was best known for its luxury automobile line marketed to Switzerland and for clandestine armored-vehicle prototyping carried out through affiliated workshops.

History

Foundation

The company was founded in 1934 following the relocation of ten members of the Van Noord family group to Schaan. The incorporation in Liechtenstein provided a favorable tax environment and access to Swiss precision manufacturing, banking, and export channels. From the outset, the firm was structured as an umbrella entity coordinating research, procurement, and finance for two operational divisions.

Corporate structure

Van Noord-Nostrini Industriewerke AG operated primarily through:

Automobili Van Noord Schaan – responsible for luxury vehicle assembly, engine machining, and precision components.
Panzerwerke Van Noord AG – responsible for armored vehicle research, prototype construction, and specialized drivetrains, frequently declared as agricultural or industrial machinery projects.

The holding company coordinated capital allocation, supplier relationships, and legal shielding for the two divisions.

Automotive production

Between 1937 and 1939', Automobili Van Noord Schaan produced the Van Noord Schaan Tipo A, a luxury automobile targeted at Swiss clients. Production emphasized precision engines and high-quality machining, with a limited output typical of boutique manufacturers.

Wartime activities

During World War II, the company used Liechtenstein’s neutrality and Swiss intermediary channels to provide components, engines, and technical services to German-aligned industrial networks while avoiding direct exposure through overt contracts. Panzerwerke Van Noord’s activities included experimental armored reconnaissance designs, most notably the VP-3 Ricognitore prototype, and the manufacture of drivetrains and power units suitable for light armored platforms.

Decline and dissolution

From 1943, escalating internal conflict within the Van Noord family and its management structure resulted in sabotage, asset disputes, and a series of killings and disappearances. These events severely disrupted production and compromised the firm’s internal security.

By 1945', the collapse of wartime industrial networks, heightened scrutiny of collaboration-linked entities, and the near-total elimination of the family leadership resulted in the firm’s dissolution. By the end of 1945, company operations in Schaan had ceased.

Legacy

Surviving documentation was reportedly fragmented due to deliberate destruction, wartime secrecy, and postwar asset seizures. Remaining physical traces were limited to scattered machine tools, workshop sites, and references in Swiss intermediary records. The company’s final assets were believed to have been absorbed into private holdings or liquidated through Swiss channels after 1945.
