== History ==
Before 1980, overseas offices and security missions of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen reported to the central leadership through arrangements created for individual territories or operations. The Großabschnitt Afrika was established in 1980, two weeks after [[Eef Paap]] became [[Führer of Tanoa]]. Because Eef Paap had only recently assumed power and was still a child, [[Jan Paap]], who had led the organization until that year, assisted with the creation of the new territorial command structure.<ref name="regional-history"/><ref name="eef-succession"/><ref name="jan-leadership"/> The same reorganization created the [[SS-Großabschnitt Süd-Atlantik und Pazifik]], [[SS-Großabschnitt Europa]], [[SS-Großabschnitt Nord-Atlantik]], and [[SS-Großabschnitt Asien]].

Monrovia was selected as the African headquarters because Liberia had been under Tanoan control since 1974 and had become the principal base for Tanoan political and military activity in Africa. The command initially operated through the puppet administration of [[Großliberia]]. Its jurisdiction expanded when [[Sierra Leone]] was incorporated into Großliberia in 1988.<ref name="liberia-grossliberia"/> [[Rwanda]] and [[Jubaland]] were placed under the Großabschnitt in 1991, while [[Namibia]] came under its authority in 1994.<ref name="rwanda-takeover"/><ref name="jubaland-incorporation"/><ref name="namibia-subordination"/> [[Annobón]] was placed under direct Tanoan administration in 2000 and became a transfer point between mainland Africa and South America.<ref name="annobon-history"/>
