== Early life ==

Martin Gerard van Noord was born in Rotterdam on 11 April 1956. His father is [[Angelo van Noord]].<ref name="angelo-personal-life"/> Angelo expected him to be more disciplined, and the two frequently argued during Martin's teenage years. From 1970, Noord spent much of his free time with friends working on mopeds and older cars.

Noord attended [[Ambachtsschool Sint-Joseph]] in [[Blijdorp]], where he studied electrical installation. After leaving school, he trained as a meter fitter.

Noord joined [[Paap Maasstroom Meetkamer]] in 1974 as a meter fitter. He was often sent to jobs that other fitters had been unable to complete, and his technical ability led to his promotion to crew foreman in 1991.

As foreman, Noord regularly argued with employees working under him and with customers. Complaints about his blunt and insulting remarks during customer visits continued for years, but management kept him in the role because of his technical ability. In 2010, Paap Maasstroom Meetkamer removed him as foreman and returned him to work as a meter fitter. He retired in 2019.

Noord married in 1982, and the couple had one child. Around 2000, his drinking became much heavier. He rarely came home and spent much of his free time drinking at a local café with friends. His brother [[Angelo Noord]] joined him there when he was available. Noord's drinking led to the couple's divorce in 2003. After the divorce, his child became estranged from him because of his drinking.

Noord continues to live in Rotterdam. He drinks beer and sometimes puts liquor in smoothies bought from fast-food restaurants. He also smokes. He prefers [[BMW]] cars and regularly uses the phrase "Ben nu nog nuchter". Within the family he is known as Kleine Dwerg, meaning "Little Dwarf". He is 1.76 metres tall and weighs approximately 82 kilograms.
